Voice of the People was a site-specific project in Dallas Texas that examined individual experiences of living in a state that had amended their constitution through defense of marriage act ballot measures to explicitly define marriage as between a man and a woman. Central to my inquiry was an interest understanding what it means for individuals to live in a state where the populace had voted to restrict their choices and rights.
As a featured artist in residence, I was commissioned by the Visual Artists Network (VAN) to create this installation to coincide with their annual conference before the repeal of DOMA and the shift towards same-sex marriage rights within many states. I created the installation in a hotel room and prior to the opening, interviewed many residents of Dallas about their experiences and feelings about the struggle for same-sex marriage. These videos were then played back during the run of the exhibition.
